Ok, so it's not a furnace, but an oven. Refractory concrete is an aggregate (sand, grog vermiculite, perlite or quarried stone) mixed with refractory cement. Do not use any heavy aggregate in the mix if you want to make it insulating. Generally a 5:1 vermiculite or perlite: cement is used for oven underfloor insulation.
A portable perlite furnace for on-site expansion. Properties of Perlite Insulation. Perlite insulation suitable for non-evacuated cryogenic or low temperature use exhibits low thermal conductivity throughout a range of densities, however, the normal recommended density range is 2.5 to 5lb/ft3 (40 to 80kg/m3). In addition to its excellent ...

The Incon H-22 Perlite Furnace The Incon H-22 has become a new standard in perlite furnaces. Production rates of over 400 cubic feet per hour [11.3 M3/hr] of coarse horticultural material are common with energy consumption, product density, and furnace droppings better than comparable furnaces.
I can tell you from experience. Perlite in you hot face leads to a green glass like material that easily melts/eats everything around it! My furnace has a mix of perlite and refractory and it actively tries to destroy it's self. The lid likes to sluff off and falls in as it melts. I will not be using it again.

Mined, crushed to grade, and sent through an expansion furnace, perlite ore pops like popcorn, taking on a useful, bright-white, super light, expanded form—essentially a matrix of tiny fused bubbles. Super-close images showing the frothy surface texture of pumice (left) and fused-bubble form factor of expanded perlite (right).
Welcome to Perlite, leading the way in providing perlite-based products for various uses. This blog will show how Perlite is made, from extraction from the ground to becoming the final product in use.The journey will cover each step, from mining the raw perlite rock to heating it until it pops like popcorn, making it light and porous.
When furnace at high temperatures, Perlite "pops" and expands up to 15 times its original volume. The resulting, lightweight particles are made up of microscopic spheres with a porous, broken surface that promotes plant growth. This allows aeration and drainage of the root system and provides holding capacity for water and nutrients.
